Monte Jewell began practicing family law in Montana in 1997 as an associate with the Missoula family law firm, Alterowitz Law Offices. From 2000 through 2002, he managed the Butte field office of the Domestic Violence Unit of Montana Legal Services Association before returning to private family law practice in Missoula.

Monte is admitted to practice before the Montana State Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the District of Montana, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Montana and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Court.

Monte is a member of the Montana State Bar Ethics Committee and the Montana Criminal Justice Act Panel. From 2007 to 2010, he was appointed to serve on the Montana Supreme Court Commission on Self-Represented Litigants.

He served as amicus counsel to the Montana Silent Witness Project, Missoula Family Violence Council, the Business and Professional Women of Montana and Sally Sjaastad in the Massee v. Thompson (No. 03-0567) decision which recognized liability for law enforcement that failed to follow victim protection statutes. He was trial and appellate counsel in the Hendershott v. Westphal (No. 10-0434) decision which helped establish the right of partner abuse victims in Montana against court-ordered mediation.

Monte also helped organize Planet Kids, the first sliding-fee scale supervised parenting and exchange center in Montana, and he co-founded the first self-help legal clinic in Missoula to serve survivors of intimate partner violence. Monte is a past president of the Boards of Directors of the Blue Mountain Family Practice Clinic and the Humane Society of Western Montana.

With his brother, Ryan Jewell, Monte helped found openmissoula, a not-for-profit Montana website to demonstrate free and open source software. He has a special interest in legal, philosophical and political issues arising from shared use, study and modification of software and other shared digital content.
